Here are 11 original photos by Mr. George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1951. I purchased the first eight of these photos via a series of eBay auctions on 06 February 2019; the other three were purchased during an eBay auction on 10 August 2024. Shown here is the well-known "Horseshoe Curve" sign with pertinent data about the Curve. "Designed and Built by the National Youth Administration." Perhaps Mr. Niles is one of the two gentlemen pictured here.

Description:
Niles I. Here is the second of 11 original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1951. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6171, a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during September of 1944 and retired in October of 1957 after just 13 years of revenue service. It's pulling a fully-loaded mineral train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona.

PRR 5368, K-4S, c. 1951
Description:
Niles I. Here is the third of 11 original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1951. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #5368 and #5508. Both locomotives were built in Juniata. #5368 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in May of 1924 and retired in September of 1955. #5508 is a T-1 (4-4-4-4) "Duplex" built in December of 1945 and retired in March of 1952. They're pulling a mail and express train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the "Pacific" will be uncoupled and returned to Altoona for further assignment. (

PRR 8798, ES-15M, c. 1951
Description:
Niles I. Here is the fourth of 11 original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1951. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8798 and #8507. Both are ES-15M road switchers built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #8798 was constructed in January of 1952, while #8507 was built in August of 1952. They're serving as helpers for a mail and express train that's rounding the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to Altoona for further assignments. Also visible is PRR/Railway Express Service cabin car #5010.

Niles I. Here is the sixth of 11 original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1951. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #4364 and #6710. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #4364 is an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" constructed as an I-1S in January of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in January of 1942, and retired in January of 1954. #6710 is an M-1A (4-8-2) "Mountain" built in April of 1930 and retired in September of 1952; note the trainphone apparatus on the tender's deck. They're rounding the Curve with a train of empty hopper cars that's heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignments. Also visible at the far left is the white smoke plume of a westbound train heading up "The Mountain" toward the Curve.
